Are friends for life? Do I even need friends?

Friendship is a powerful bond that can be uplifting and empowering. The Quran emphasises the importance of being mindful of the friends we choose, guiding us to prioritise friendships based on faith and righteousness. It’s a relationship where people are committed to each other’s well-being, in good and bad times. Genuine friendships take time and effort to mature. The outcome of friendship is essential for maintaining mental and physical health.

The Quran encourages friendships, highlighting its benefits and potential dangers. The advice is to be careful of the company you keep and base it on faith and righteousness. Avoid friendships that lead to sin or harm.

Allah is the Best Friend

In the Quran, Allah is portrayed as the best friend, Wali. It means the protector, close and friend. This is a deep spiritual relationship, Allah supports, protects and guides those who are obedient and loyal to his Prophet (peace be upon him) and follow the teachings of Islam. The Quran declares, “Allah is the friend of believers who takes them out of darkness into light. On the opposite the false gods are the friends of the disbelievers, who take them out of light into darkness; these are people of the Fire, where they will stay forever” (Al-Baqarah: 257). This verse illustrates Allah as a supportive friend of the believers, helping them transition from ignorance (symbolised by darkness) into Islam (symbolised by light).

Five signs of a best friend

  1. Trustworthy and Loyal: A true friend is reliable; someone you can depend on through thick and thin.
  2. Supportive and Understanding: They offer empathy and comfort in difficult times, listening without judgment.
  3. Respectful and Accepting: They embrace your differences and support your choices without trying to change you.
  4. Forgiving and caring: They can forgive mistakes and work through conflicts, understanding that no one is perfect.
  5. Lifelong and Unbreakable: True friendship will stand the test of time, supporting each other through life’s ups and downs.

The Prophet’s Friends

The disciples of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were his closest friends, some prayed five times with him and sat in his company to learn and to socialise. Those companions who lived outside Medina would meet him on Friday every week.

Often described as discipleship, a student-teacher relationship, mentor and mentee but the prophet’s attitude was gentle, compassionate and friendly. The four prominent disciples, Abu Bakar, Umar, Usman, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them), are referred to as ‘Char yaar,’ which means ‘The Four Friends.’

Guidance and Support of Allah for His friends

A loyal friend is always there, just look how Allah will be loyal to his friends when they are in most need on Judgement Day, “They shall have the Home of Peace near their Lord, and He will be their protecting friend because of what they did” (Al-An’am: 127). Affirming Allah’s amazing loyalty by giving them eternal peace.

So, Allah’s Friendship is the greatest blessing here and in the hereafter, read: “Prophet, We have established a Sharia for you so follow it and do not follow the whims of the ignorant. They cannot benefit you in the slightest against the will of Allah. The wrongdoers are each other’s friends while Allah is the friend of the pious. This Quran is full of insights for humanity, guidance and kindness for those who have firm faith” (Al-Jathiya:19-21). Here, the friendship of Allah is reserved for those who are righteous and strive to obey him. A friendship that extends into spiritual and eternal life.

Choose Friends Carefully!

The Majestic Quran advises caution in selecting friends and warns against friendships with those who lead others away from the path of Allah. It praises dedication and loyalty, “Allah has declared ‘my Messenger and I will be the winners.’ Allah is Strong and Almighty. You will not find Muslims befriending those who oppose Allah and his Messenger, even if they are parents, children, brothers or relatives of theirs. These are the ones whose hearts Allah has strengthened with faith and empowered them” (Al-Mujadilah: 21- 22).

This stresses that a believer’s loyalty is with those who align themselves with Allah. This is Allah’s Party! The Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “A person follows his friend’s religion so, be careful who you take as a friend” (Muslim). Friendship with a wicked person will be regretted, the Quran warns against bad friends. It describes how a person will regret associating with bad companions who led them away from Islam. “On that day the evil-doer will bite his hand and regretfully say, ‘Woe to me, I wish I had taken the right path in the company of the blessed Messenger. Woe to me, I wish I had not taken so and so a friend, as he took me away from the Quran after it had come to me’” (Al-Furqan: 27-29).

Conclusion

Friendships are not just social bonds – they are spiritual relationships that can influence our faith and well-being. The Quran teaches us to seek friends who uplift us, who support us in our spiritual journey, and who walk with us on the path of righteousness. Ultimately, Allah’s friendship is the greatest blessing we can have, offering guidance, protection and peace in this life and the next.
