Islam is more than just a religion; it is a comprehensive way of life that provides clear guidance on the purpose of life and how to achieve it. It offers a holistic approach to human development, focusing on self-improvement, understanding the realities of life, and fostering relationships with others and the world around us.

Self-Evaluation Based on Quranic Principles

In this article, I aim to guide you through a simple self-evaluation based on a passage from the Quran. The Majestic Quran states: “The believers have succeeded: they are humble and focused in their prayers, they avoid meaningless activities, they give Zakat, they guard their chastity except with their spouses… The believers fulfil their responsibilities and contracts. They care about their prayers. They are the heirs who will inherit paradise and remain there forever” (Al-Muminun: 1-10).

This passage highlights the key elements of a devout Muslim’s life, which include:

  1. Focus on prayers
  2. Avoiding meaningless activities
  3. Practising charity
  4. Living a chaste and modest life
  5. Honouring contracts and responsibilities

Personal, Family and Community Self-Evaluation

Let’s look at these in a bit more detail.

  1. Focus on prayers: The Muslim community has demonstrated a strong commitment to worship, as evidenced by establishing over two thousand places of worship, ranging from small terrace houses to large mosques. For instance, in Nottingham, a city with 40,000 Muslims, there are 38 mosques and Islamic centres. This dedication to worship is commendable, nearly 70% of young men attend Friday prayers regularly, reflecting a solid engagement with this aspect of religious life.
  2. Avoiding meaningless activities: A key quality of a believer is the ability to turn away from vain pursuits and the distractions of modern life. Many Muslims continue to lead simple, austere lives, avoiding consumerism and the burdens of debt. By steering clear of compulsive shopping and frivolous activities, they protect themselves from unnecessary stress and maintain focus on what truly matters.
  3. Practising charity: Muslims are known for generosity, giving over one billion pounds annually to charitable causes. Surveys have consistently shown that Muslims are among the most generous citizens in Britain. This is a testament to the community’s selflessness and compassion, highlighting their strong commitment to helping others.
  4. Living a chaste and modest life: Modesty and chastity are fundamental qualities that help preserve the integrity of the family. However, there are concerning trends within the Muslim community regarding marriage, divorce and family disputes. Young people are delaying marriage and there is a rise in divorce rates and family conflicts. These issues challenge the maintenance of traditional family values, which are crucial for a stable society.
  5. Honouring contracts and responsibilities: Honesty and truthfulness are essential for fulfilling contracts and keeping promises. These qualities are the foundation of an orderly society, where trust and reliability are paramount. Upholding these values ensures that business and social interactions proceed smoothly, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect.

Conclusion

In summary, I have provided an evaluation of the religious life of Muslims based on a Quranic passage. The key aspects of this life include a focus on prayer, avoiding meaningless activities, practising charity, living a chaste and modest life, and honouring contracts and responsibilities. My assessment reflects how well the Muslim community is adhering to these principles.

Positives:

  • Worship: The community generally demonstrates a strong commitment to prayer and worship, with a significant number of mosques and high attendance at Friday prayers.
  • Charity: Muslims are recognised for their generosity, making substantial contributions to charitable causes and reflecting a caring nature.

Areas of concern:

  • Chastity and family values: There are troubling trends related to marriage, divorce, and family disputes, indicating challenges in maintaining traditional family values.
  • Simple living: While many Muslims lead simple lives, there is a growing influence of consumerism and modern lifestyle pressures that must be addressed.

As you can see from my analysis the Muslim community performs well in areas like worship and charity. However, greater attention is needed in areas like family values and the influence of consumerism. This article encourages self-reflection to ensure that these religious virtues are not only lived out daily but also shared within families and communities.
