Many of us are blessed with good jobs, caring families, warm homes and above all good health. Yet, despite these blessings, we often feel overwhelmed. Our busy lives lead to stress, leaving us dissatisfied. We expend great effort, time and resources but the results seem unremarkable. Life feels empty despite career success and material comforts. Today, I want to share a solution: Barakah. Did you know Barakah isn’t just about an increase in wealth, but finding abundance in time, relationships and even knowledge?

What is Barakah?

The Arabic word barakah means to grow, increase and be filled with goodness. It is the secret ingredient that makes time more productive, talent more impactful and resources more beneficial. Barakah is a divine blessing – a gift from Allah – that brings joy, fulfilment, and unexpected abundance. When someone has a child, we say “Mubarak” to them meaning that this child will be a source of blessings, increasing happiness and fulfilment. Similarly, when we say “Eid Mubarak,” we are praying for Allah’s favour and joy on this special day and beyond.

How Do We Receive Barakah?

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to achieve so much with limited resources, while others struggle despite having plenty? Could Barakah be the missing key? The opposite of Barakah is Qillat-al-Barakah (misfortune) or lai’na (divine curse), meaning deprivation of Allah’s kindness and favour. Allah is the source of all Barakah – the fountain – from which all blessings flow. Accessing this spring of goodness requires devotion, spiritual exercises and practical actions.

Spiritual Exercises for Barakah

  1. Dua (Supplication): Dua is a direct line to Allah, a way to seek His help, express gratitude and ask for Barakah. Allah reminds us: “Why should my Lord care for you if you don’t pray to Him?” (Furqan: 77). Making dua invites blessings into every routine and task.
  2. Reciting the Quran: The Majestic Quran is a limitless source of Barakah. Allah says: “We revealed to you the blessed book so they think about its message, and then smart people will follow its teachings” (Saad: 29). It nourishes the soul, comforts the heart and provides guidance for a meaningful life.
  3. Using Basmala: Begin every action with “Bismillah” whether it’s eating, travelling, or starting a new project, invoking Allah’s name transforms the task and fills it with Barakah.

Five Practical Actions for Barakah

  1. Lawful Earning and Spending: Honesty and integrity in financial dealings bring Barakah into wealth. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Seeking lawful earnings is an obligation after the obligatory duties” (Bayhaqi).
  2. Waking Up Early: Start your day early to maximise productivity. The Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The early hours are blessed for my Ummah” (Ibn Majah).
  3. Eating Together: Sharing meals grows love and unity, that’s Barakah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Two people’s food is sufficient for three, four people’s food is sufficient for five or six” (Bukhari).
  4. Giving Charity: Charity purifies wealth and brings divine blessings. The Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Fortify your wealth by giving Zakat, treat your sick by giving charity, and face suffering with prayer and humility” (Abu Dawud).
  5. Following the Sunnah: Living according to the Prophet’s example ensures Barakah in every aspect of life. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the righteous guided successors. Hold firmly to it …” (Abu Dawud).

Barakah increases time, resources and impact. A small meal becomes satisfying, limited time stretches to accomplish more and modest earnings bring unexpected prosperity. Barakah leads to peace, patience and joy. It’s a divine multiplier that enriches your life. Can you think of one moment in your life when you felt you achieved more than what seemed possible? Could that have been Barakah?

Conclusion

Barakah is more than a blessing; it is a key to human flourishing, contentment and success. By weaving spiritual devotion and practical actions into your daily life, you invite Allah’s favour and transform your experience. Let’s strive to seek Barakah in all we do, ensuring our time, talent and treasure are filled with divine blessings, bringing peace and fulfilment to ourselves and those around us.
